Benjamin Brown (1865-1942) was born 14 July 1865 in Marion, Arkansas. He studied at the University of Tennessee and the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, under Paul Harney and John Fry. In 1890 he spent time studying under Jean Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant at the Academie Julian in Paris. He started portrait and still life art, but after moving to Pasadena in 1896, he began landscape art.
